Kidnapped, imprisoned - and now sentenced to death: German activist Jamshid Sharmahd was found guilty of "corruption on earth" in a mock trial in Iran.
A revolutionary court in Tehran holds the 67-year-old responsible for, among other things, a terrorist attack, the Misan judicial portal announced Tuesday. The verdict could be appealed to the Supreme Court.
The activist Sharmahd was abducted by the Iranian intelligence service during a business trip in Dubai in the summer and brought to Iran. Since then, he has been held incommunicado in Tehran. Sharmahd had come to Germany as a child, living in Hanover before later emigrating to the United States. He has German citizenship.
His daughter Gazelle has been tirelessly raising awareness of the case since the abduction, reporting on bans on contact and mistreatment of her father in prison. She is also in contact with the German government. CDU leader Friedrich Merz has taken on the political sponsorship of Jamshid Sharmahd.
